Girls on the Run Registration Opens Jan. 9

Resolve to help your daughter activate her limitless potential this year by registering her for Girls on the Run. Online lottery registration opens at 12 p.m. Jan. 9 at www.gotrtriangle.org.

Girls on the Run inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident, using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running. Girls will train for and run a 5K while exploring concepts of competence, confidence, connection, character, caring and contribution. Completing the 5K gives the girls a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Girls do not need to be “runners” or into running to participate since activities are fun and age-appropriate and will build up their running ability over time.
Girls on the Run lessons encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Participants explore and discuss their own beliefs around experiences and challenges girls face at this age. They also develop important strategies and skills to help them navigate life experiences. The program starts with helping the girls get a better understanding of who they are and what’s important to them. Then, the girls look at the importance of team work and healthy relationships. Finally, they explore how they can positively connect with and shape the world.

The WLE PTA will hold its annual Can & Coat Drive November 28th through December 9th. Donations will be accepted in carpool line and in the school lobby each morning of the collection period.

Once again, we’re proud to partner with Grow Our Kids’ Little Bellies program, which provides food for students and their families (including several of our own) over track-out periods. Grow Our Kids hopes that this food not only helps families in need but also positions children to return to school feeling nourished and ready to learn.

You can help by donating nonperishable foods. Grow Our Kids particularly needs the following:
  • peanut butter, jelly and spaghetti sauce (plastic jars, please)
  • spaghetti
  • soup and canned stews
  • healthy cereals
  • oatmeal (single-serve and canisters)
  • grits
  • apple sauce and fruit cups (with natural juices)
  • dried rice and beans
  • canned beans
  • macaroni and cheese
  • instant potatoes
  • canned white meat chicken and tuna (packed in water)
  • self-serve snacks (like granola bars, whole grain fruit bars and nutritious crackers)
Additionally, we will be collecting gently used coats for Note in the Pocket, a nonprofit organization that provides clothing to impoverished and homeless children in Wake County.

Thank you in advance for your support of our Can & Coat Drive!
